At PIC International 2025 in Brussels, François Simoens was invited to present talk on “Scaling up LiDAR with Silicon Photonics”, offering valuable insights into how silicon photonics can revolutionize LiDAR technology. He emphasized the potential of this platform to integrate advanced features such as Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) detection — enabling not only precise distance measurement but also real-time velocity sensing.
François also highlighted how on-chip integration of LiDAR systems can drive significant miniaturization and cost reductions through scalable, high-volume manufacturing. These two factors — size and cost — remain key barriers to mainstream adoption.
Silicon photonics is poised to be a game changer, not only for the automotive LiDAR market and autonomous mobility, but also for a wide range of emerging applications beyond transportation.
